Habitat's Year End Accomplishments
posted August 2010
The 2009-2010 Build year was successful for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona (HFHCAZ). With the help of our sponsors and volunteers, we built and renovated 41 homes for families in need of affordable housing.
Legacy Project (Net Zero Engery Home) HFHCAZ continues to build sustainable “green” homes. All of our new homes built in 2009-2010 are Energy Star Certified, with 18 seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification. One of these homes was the 2009 United States Green Building Council’s Legacy Project, which partnered with Habitat to build a Net Zero Energy home in five days and is seeking LEED Platinum Certification. Funding for this home was provided by Wells Fargo Housing Foundation.
Before Renovation All of these homes were built or renovated through the support of over 12,000 volunteers contributing over 105,000 volunteer hours. Thank you to all of our volunteers and sponsors who contributed to this effort. With continued community support we look forward to building or renovating 50 homes in the 2010-2011 build year.

Habitat's New Homeowner Maintenance Program
posted August 2010
LEED certification of Habitat homes sets us apart as a leader for the environment and demonstrates our commitment to build the best homes in the state. Healthier for our homeowners and more energy efficient, our goal is to reduce the on-going operating cost to our homeowners and make their homes an even better value.
To ensure that Habitat homeowners can maximize the value of the LEED certified home, we have officially launched our new Homeowner Maintenance Program. We will teach our homeowners how their own behavior and habits can impact the operating performance of their home and their utility bills. Human behavior accounts for a significant portion of the cost, and can impact the quality of air in the home, too.
In our new program, we will cover energy, waste and water use reduction, healthy homes – all the variables we bring into the home that might not be very healthy for our families. In addition, we will cover basic maintenance and educate homeowners on how to take care of the minor issues related to maintaining their home. Homeowners will also learn when it is necessary to call an expert.
Educated and confident homeowners can take pride in their ability to transition from renter to homeowner. Many times Habitat "green" homeowners will be a step ahead because they understand the impact and significance of going green.
